My philosophy on these, for what it’s worth, is that furniture that’s built in should look like it has always been there and was the design of the original architect. In short, it should be of the style and materials already in the home. On the other hand, movable pieces of furniture (desk, tables. small cabinets) can and should reflect your style choices because they belong to you, not the home. This is clearly true in a bedroom where bed and dresser are personal choices – and we have built some really unique pieces. The exception would be the kitchen – a room unto itself – that undergoes radical change, on average, about every 25 years.
